In producing a unit of work to develop students’ understanding of sustainable gardening through individual interests and curiosities, the teacher has provided opportunities for parents and carers to be involved in their children’s learning. The teacher, along with a colleague, updates parents and carers on the activities of the Early Learning Centre through a newsletter, and contacts parents directly to involve them in the project on sustainable gardening, encouraging a strong connection between home and school activities to deepen the learning experience of students.
Scotch Oakburn College Early Learning Centre (ELC) is part of the EL-Year 5 Junior School, and the ELC takes students from ages 3 to 5. The College is a fee-paying Independent school with a history of student achievement and community service. The overall vision for the centre and the school is to develop student autonomy, tolerance and humanist thinking with an appreciation of individual differences. The arts play an important role at the school in enabling students to represent, express and communicate meaning, building the capacity to deepen students’ cognitive and affective understanding of content.
