Building on the initial teacher education (ITE) reform agenda outlined in the 2015 report Action Now: Classroom Ready Teachers, the Education Council recently endorsed revisions to the procedures section of the Accreditation of initial teacher education programs in Australia: Standards and Procedures.
On 14 September 2018 the Education Council endorsed the updated Accreditation Standards and Procedures, which will require all jurisdictions to publish a summary of each ITE accreditation decision and further strengthen these three key areas in the ITE accreditation system:
Ensuring that ITE program accreditation decisions are made consistently and to an appropriately high standard across Australia
Ensuring that all ITE programs require graduates to pass a reliable and valid teaching performance assessment (TPA), which demands a demonstration of an appropriate level of classroom readiness
Using the information generated by the ITE accreditation system to create an evidence base on what works best in ITE in Australia
