Teaching assistants are a critical part of the education workforce. Research suggests that when deployed effectively, their work can contribute to a lift in student progress and achievement.

The Guidelines for the Optimal Deployment of Teaching Assistants in Australian Classrooms (the Guidelines) were published in July 2025 to help schools make the most out of this essential role.

The Guidelines provide practical, evidence-informed advice. They include 7 key strategies for schools to use to maximise the effectiveness of their teaching assistants.

What do the Guidelines focus on?

The Guidelines explore:

  • The role of teaching assistants, including examples from real schools.
  • Seven school-wide and classroom-based strategies for schools to use.
  • Career progression and pre-employment preparation for teaching assistants.
  • Who plays a role in supporting teaching assistants, and what actions they can take.

How can the Guidelines be used?

The Guidelines assist principals and other school leaders to deploy teaching assistants to support teaching and learning in the classroom. They are designed to:

  • be flexible and adaptable
  • suit local contexts and student needs
  • consider diverse educational contexts and unique needs of primary, secondary and special school settings.

How were the Guidelines developed?

The Guidelines draw from Australian and international research, which shows that when supported and used in specific evidence-informed ways, teaching assistants can have a direct, positive impact in the classroom.

They have also been informed by extensive consultation with Australian education stakeholders.

Who should read the Guidelines?

The Guidelines are designed for:

  • System and sector leaders
  • Principals
  • Other school leaders
  • Teachers
  • Teaching assistants.
