Teachers are the number one in-school influence on student outcomes so it’s important that we understand the teaching experience.

The Australian Teacher Workforce Data Strategy (ATWD) connects teacher workforce data from around Australia. The ATWD will deliver critical insights to support better informed investment and decision making and deepen our understanding of the issues we need to address together.

For the first time in Australia we will have nationally consistent data on how many teachers are graduating, how many get jobs, their professional development and whether or not they stay in the profession. By learning more about the teaching experience, we can better understand the challenges and opportunities teachers face as a collective and support the profession.

Building a picture of the Australian teaching workforce

The ATWD is currently being implemented by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in partnership with the Department of Education, the states and territories, teacher regulatory authorities and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

Participation is easy

We’ve partnered with every teacher regulatory authority to make sure the ATWD creates a complete picture of the Australian teaching workforce. To address teacher data differences between states and enrich the national consistency of the data, teachers will be invited to complete a short survey when renewing their registration.

We support investment that ‘unleashes’ teaching expertise, so that it is properly understood and shared across systems, sectors and geographic divides.
