The teacher has used knowledge of Mathematics, the curriculum and her students to plan and implement an effective teaching and learning program related to decimal concepts.  A key goal is to provide well-structured and well-resourced learning opportunities that target students at their point of need and engage them in lessons that are stimulating and interesting and lead to deep understanding.
This series of Mathematics lessons was planned for Year 6 students in a metropolitan Catholic primary school. Students involved in the lessons were selected because they were experiencing difficulties with understanding decimals at their expected class level. The lessons were structured to achieve maximum learning for the varying abilities within the student group. A feature of the unit design was to set challenging yet achievable outcomes to ensure success.
  • In planning your lesson, how would you make special provision for students with difficulties learning mathematical concepts?
  • What resources might you use to target students’ individual learning needs in Mathematics?
