Olivia Petkofski, a primary school teacher, demonstrates how to implement inquiry-based learning that aims to build students’ literacy knowledge and skills across multiple subject areas on the topic of travel.

Olivia promotes a safe, inclusive and vibrant learning environment, encouraging her Year 1 students to engage in activities that promote sharing their ideas and making connections to their own experiences to shape the learning intentions.

Olivia uses a diverse range of teaching tools and visual displays to support her instructional teaching of literacy whilst encouraging students to independently source information to guide their learning. Olivia’s energetic teaching style engages students in authentic learning, complemented by relatable conversations and effective questioning techniques to understand how students are understanding the content.

Olivia’s strategic use of prompting questions enables her to gain further insights into her students’ learning. Through this approach, combined with ongoing classroom observations, Olivia can determine how each student is comprehending the content and ask further questions to check for understanding.
