The Australian Teacher Workforce Data (ATWD) assist governments to better understand movements and developments within the profession and drive better educational outcomes for Australia’s children and young people.
The ATWD has released new data on current and future teacher workforce and initial teacher education graduate supply, including where they work and the subjects they teach, as part of the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan.
The projections are designed to be a workforce planning tool for all states and territories so that they can combine with their own data to gain a better understanding of their teacher workforce.
The projections are not forecasts, do not model all sources of supply and demand, and should not be interpreted as direct measures of teacher shortage or surplus. Teacher workforce projections involve 4 retention projections based on the 2024 cohort of registered teachers and are not forecasts of the total future workforce.
Initial teacher education graduate supply
This report presents projections of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) graduate supply in Australia from 2025 to 2032. It provides the first nationally consistent estimates of graduate teacher supply, disaggregated by region and subject specialisation, to inform workforce planning across the education system. These projections aim to improve understanding of current and future ITE graduates, which are a major element contributing to national teacher supply.
