Being in a room with talented teachers, who have also demonstrated expertise against a nationally recognised professional framework, is a powerful reminder of what quality teaching looks like in action.  It’s even better when you are doing that in the town you grew up in!

In September 2026, I had the pleasure of being part of Tassie’s Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) community, in Launceston in northern Tasmania.

As the profession navigates what AI means for teaching and learning, one thing hasn't changed: the importance of teacher expertise. Recognising, drawing on and growing that expertise is the biggest in school factor that will support Australia’s children and young people to grow.

HALT certification isn’t simply an acknowledgement of experience or longevity in teaching. It recognises teachers who can demonstrate highly accomplished or lead practice and its impact, and who contribute beyond their own classroom to strengthen the practice of others.

I'm really excited about the growth of national certification. As of December 31, 2025, there were 2,263 nationally certified HALTs, with 574 teachers achieving certification in 2025 alone!

Tassie has more than doubled the number of certified teachers in less than a year! 🤩

The Summit itself is a great example of Tasmania building a stronger community around nationally certified teachers and creating future opportunities for HALTs to connect and share their expertise.

If you’re interested in exploring the national teacher certification at the Highly Accomplished or Lead career stage, AITSL’s resources are a great place to start.
