As we approach National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), I want to personally acknowledge the vital role you all play in progressing reconciliation through culturally responsive teaching and leadership.

This year’s theme Bridging Now to Next calls on all Australians to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

At AITSL, our vision for reconciliation is grounded in our purpose: to support teachers to maximise learning for all children and young people in Australia. Central to this is creating learning environments where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners feel known and safe, and are supported to embrace their identities and achieve their full potential.

I invite you to access tools and resources to help develop and deepen your reconciliation teaching practice. These dedicated resources are designed to support your ongoing practice, wherever you are on your reconciliation journey.

I also want to reflect on the 2025 HALT Summit, held on Ngunnawal Country (Canberra) on 8 and 9 May. It was a privilege to attend this year’s gathering, where more than 500 Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers came together in person and virtually to share their expertise, build networks, and explore the theme Spark Ideas, Ignite Impact. As a first-time attendee, I was genuinely inspired by the energy in the room and the fresh thinking that teachers and leaders brought to every conversation.

What I take away most from the Summit is the shared sense of purpose and the clear demonstration of what makes the teaching profession so impactful. Teachers drive meaningful change. You challenge the status quo, bring ideas to life, and inspire colleagues to continually improve practice.

Your leadership is at the heart of a stronger, more inclusive education system for all children and young people.

Thank you for the work you do each day.

Warm regards,

tim-sig
