AITSL provides national leadership for the Commonwealth, state and territory governments in promoting excellence in the profession of teaching and school leadership.

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) came into being on 1 January 2010. The Commonwealth Minister for Education has outlined MCEECDYA's priorities for the Institute in a Letter of Expectation.

AITSL has responsibility for:

  • rigorous national professional standards
  • fostering and driving high quality professional development for teachers and school leaders
  • working collaboratively across jurisdictions and engaging with key professional bodies.

The AITSL Board held its most recent meeting on 15 November 2011.

  • World renowned educational expert, Dame Pat Collarbone, works with WA school leaders

    From late November, school leaders from Western Australia will have the valuable opportunity to work with Dame Pat Collarbone to discuss the new National Professional Standard for Principals and to plan for action in their local schools.

    Dame Pat, who lives in the UK, received a DBE in 1997 as an acknowledgement for her services to education and has a global reputation as an expert in the field of educational leadership.

  • Minister's announcement: 'Top teachers to be rewarded'

    The Hon Peter Garrett AM, MP Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth, has issued a media release announcing that high performing teachers in Australian schools will be recognised through a staged implementation of a reward payment scheme linked to the first National Professional Standards for Teachers.

  • Professional Learning of Teachers and School Leaders

    The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) has released a draft Australian Charter for the Professional Learning of Teachers and School Leaders. The Charter has been endorsed by all Ministers of Education, for national consideration and conversation. The Charter was developed in consultation with a range of education stakeholders and seeks to enhance a nation-wide professional learning culture for all teachers and school leaders.
