Australian Professional Standards for Teachers

Ethical information use

About this Illustration of Practice

The teacher librarian has created a professional learning program for her colleagues on copyright and intellectual property. The program is to be delivered to students once the teachers become familiar with its content and with the technologies used. The professional learning contextualises student learning by demonstrating delivery through a virtual learning environment. It uses internet resources, video, learning objects and online tools including surveys, quizzes and a referencing generator. Teachers interrogate the content and personalise the unit within their own virtual classroom.

In her role as teacher librarian, the teacher responds to the identified needs of middle school teachers regarding the ethical use of information by students. She designed a unit of work on copyright and presents it in a newly adopted, system-wide virtual learning environment (VLE). Teachers explore the unit, undertake some of the tasks and consider strategies for delivery. While teachers have had incidental exposure to some of the tools in the learning sequence, this is their first experience with the VLE.
