In August 2006 Teaching Australia released three major research studies on professional teaching standards.

Two of the studies were commissioned from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and were undertaken by teams led by Dr Lawrence Ingvarson. A third study was conducted by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT) about the use of advanced standards for mathematics teachers for professional learning in schools.

In September 2006 Teaching Australia released Professional teaching associations and professional standards: embedding standards in the 'discourse of the profession', by Terry Hayes

These studies will help inform discussions within the Australian teaching profession about the development of national standards for advanced teaching and school leadership.
