Australia’s relative decline in student outcomes in recent years has put the spotlight on the necessity to improve teacher quality across Australia’s diverse education systems. Strengthening development and continuous improvement of teachers in order to improve learning in the classroom is arguably the greatest and most worthwhile challenge facing the current generation of system leaders in education.
This paper draws on Hay Group research and consulting experience in education and other industries around the world. It presents and discusses the principles, key features and enabling conditions relating to successful approaches to teacher performance and development. It provides practical examples and advice on the implementation of new approaches.
This research informed the development of resources in AITSL’s Teacher Toolkit.
