Certification of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers

The National Partnership on Improving Teacher Quality commits all governments to national consistency in certification of Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers. The National Professional Standards for Teachers describe what teachers should know and be able to do at these career stages.

Ministerial endorsement of the principles and major features of certification for consultation

All Australian Ministers for Education met in October to consider a large number of reforms in relation to national education. AITSL presented a proposal for consultation on voluntary certification of excellent teachers. The Certification of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers: Principles and major features was endorsed for consultation by Ministers.

AITSL will continue to consult and engage widely with teachers, school leaders, jurisdictional and sectoral representatives across the nation to develop a final proposal including detailed processes to present to Ministers for endorsement in 2012.

Consultation process

Consultation on the detailed set of principles and processes for certification of Highly Accomplished and Lead teachers is currently under way.  AITSL is continuing to work closely with education stakeholders to refine the proposed processes for certification.

A final proposal for the Certification of Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers: Principles and processes will be presented to Ministers at the Standing Council in April 2012.
