Australia's first National Professional Standard for Principals was endorsed by Ministers at the Standing Council of Education and Early Childhood on 8 July 2011.
The content Standard is a public statement which sets out what principals are expected to know, understand and do to achieve in their work. It is represented as interdependent and integrated model that recognises three leadership requirements that a principal draws upon within five areas of professional practice.

The Standard provides a:
- framework for professional learning
- basis to inform strategies for attracting, preparing and developing principals for leading 21st Century Schools
- guide to self-reflection, self-assessment and development
- guide to inform the management of self and others
The Standard has been developed through an intensive and collaborative process involving national and international research drafting and critical review and feedback from over 550 stakeholders.
